Proposals to introduce E10 Ethanol Fuel Mixtures

There is currently a lot of concerns being raised with proposals to introduce E10 fuel; in particular that it will do significant damage to vehicles produced before 2000

So firstly what is E10 petrol? The table below provides an overview.

The Government is moving to encourage the change and has recently held a consultation.

The Consultation notes unleaded petrol in the UK contains up to 5% bioethanol, a grade known as E5. E10 petrol contains up to 10% bioethanol and is not yet available in the UK. This consultation seeks feedback on proposals to ensure a continued supply of E5 petrol for those motorists who will need it and a call for evidence on whether and how best to introduce E10 petrol. The consultation also seeks views on proposals to implement new fuel labelling as required by the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive which plans to change the consumer message that must accompany the sale of E10. The Consultation is closed but the Consultation Document can be viewed HERE.

The consultation response published so far covers the fuel pump labelling aspects of the above consultation on E10 petrol, consumer protection and fuel pump labelling. The introduction of fuel labelling is required by the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive and this response sets out how fuel labelling will be implemented both at fuel pumps at filling stations and in new vehicles. This response document can be viewed HERE and the associated impact assessment HERE.

A further response will be published later in 2019 concerning the E10 fuel and consumer protection aspects of the original consultation.
